MEXICO CITY (National Team) - American coach Nolan Richardson has been appointed the new coach of Mexico.

The 66-year-old, who has 38 years' experience as a coach, is best known for leading Arkansas Razorbacks to the NCAA title in 1994.

"If I had not thought I can win important things with this team, I wouldn't have accepted the offer to coach the Mexican national team," he said.

Richardson added that he wanted to recruit Denver Nuggets forward Eduardo Najera for the team to play at the FIBA Americas Championship.

"This is a new beginning for Mexican basketball and we expect to crown it with the qualification of the team to the 2008 Olympic Games," said Mexican basketball chief Juan Gonzalez.

The FIBA Americas Championship, the draw for which is on Wednesday, provides two direct berths to next year's Olympics in Beijing as well as offering the chance for others to play in a pre-Olympic qualifying tournament.
