CANCUN (2009 FIBA Americas Championship) – Mexico are not among the favorites to finish in the top four at the FIBA Americas Championship and thus qualify for next year’s FIBA World Championship in Turkey but they will be a force to be reckoned with following the commitment of two key players to the national side.

NBA big man Eduardo Najera and Earl Watson have confirmed they will represent the Mexicans when they play in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from August 26 to September 6.

Najera has played in the NBA for nine years, last season with New Jersey, while Watson is a seven-year pro who averaged more than 26 minutes per game for the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008-09.

Looking to reach the FIBA World Championship for the first time since 1974, the Mexicans will go up against Canada, Uruguay, the US Virgin Islands and hosts Puerto Rico at the FIBA Americas Championship in group play.

To prepare for Puerto Rico, Mexico will host the COCABA Championship (August 10-14) in Cancun.

That event is a qualifying competition for the 2010 Centrobasket.
