MEX/ARG/BRA/URU – Obras Sanitarias edge Joinville in OT; Halcones Xalapa hammer Malvin

XALAPA (FIBA Americas League) - Obras Sanitarias and Halcones Xalapa won their opening day games in Group C of the FIBA Americas League on Wednesday night in Mexico.

Gustavo Oroná poured in 16 points as Obras scraped a 72-71 overtime win over Brazilian outfit Joinville.

The fans were treated to a thrilling first game because at the end of regulation, the contest was tied at 65-65.

Once in the extra period, Joinville got their noses in front at 71-70.

Cristian Cortes came to the rescue for Obras by hitting a mid-range jump shot for the win.

Maurice Spillers contributed 11 points and Brandon Kurtz 10 Obras Sanitarias.

Manteguinha poured in a game-high 19 points in defeat.

Meanwhile, Halcones Xalapa blew away Malvin of Uruguay in the second game of the night, 93-66

After going to half-time with a 47-39 advantage, they extended the lead to 74-58 with 10 minutes remaining and cruised the rest of the way.

Victor Mariscal had 16 points for Xalapa, who also got 14 apiece from Rommel Marentez and Leandro Garcia Morales.
