Melisa Gretter becomes newest assists leader at FIBA Women’s AmeriCup

    Short Read

With her four dimes against the Dominican Republic on Monday, Argentinian point guard rose to the top of the assist leaderboard.

SANTIAGO (Chile) – Argentina hit 11 three-pointers on Monday against Dominican Republic, but none of them were as significant as the one that occurred moments before the end of the half at Centro de Deportes Colectivos in Santiago, Chile. When Melisa Gretter found Macarena D’urso for a long-range strike with four seconds left before halftime, the 32-year-old point guard became the most recent FIBA Women’s AmeriCup assist leader.

Her four assists allowed her to reach 119, the most by any player since 2003. Ineidis Casanova of Cuba owned the previous high mark (116). “Honestly, I wasn’t thinking about any record, but I’m happy. I’m especially grateful to my teammates who helped me achieve it.” Gretter said after the game. “What mattered most to me—and what I prepared for—was to be in top shape for this tournament and to help Argentina finish as high as possible.” Gretter is averaging 4.7 assists per game across 3 contests and is only trailing Olivia Miles (USA) so far in the tournament. However, her 4.7 assist-to-turnover ratio is far superior and the best of any player through Monday’s action. Her record might not be safe for long, though. Puerto Rico’s Pamela Rosado has 105 assists in the same period and so far has played one fewer game than Gretter in the current edition. NOTE: All data is compiled from 2003 to the present day.
