    Malaysia - Malaysia thrashed in opener

    Defending champions Malaysia were outclassed 98-67 by the Philippines in their opening match of the Southeast Asian Junior Men's Basketball Championship at the Maba Stadium in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. Malaysia held a 47-43 lead at halftime but were blown away in the third quarter as the Philippines embarked on a 18-0 run to break a 49-49 tie. The Philippines ended the quarter with a 72-51 lead.

    Defending champions Malaysia were outclassed 98-67 by the Philippines in their opening match of the Southeast Asian Junior Men's Basketball Championship at the Maba Stadium in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

    Malaysia held a 47-43 lead at halftime but were blown away in the third quarter as the Philippines embarked on a 18-0 run to break a 49-49 tie.

    The Philippines ended the quarter with a 72-51 lead.

    Malaysia were unable to reduce the deficit in the fourth quarter as the Philippines cruised through.

    "Tiredness crept in which caused my boys to lose concentration. They failed to follow instructions and started playing their individual game which cost us this match," said a displeased Malaysia coach Tan Kok Heng.

    RESULTS -- Thailand 82 Indonesia 50; Philippines 98 Malaysia 67.

    FIXTURES -- Today: Philippines v Thailand (6pm); Singapore v Malaysia (8.45pm) (Note: all matches at Maba Stadium).
