VILNIUS (LKL) - Zalgiris Kaunas made all of the headlines in the 2010-11 by first sacking Darius Maskoliunas in the middle of the LKL Finals against Lietuvos Rytas and then allowing the players to coach themselves.

Zalgiris ended up falling to Lietuvos Rytas in the series.

The soap opera is at Lietuvos Rytas this season.

The Vilnius club decided to part with Croatian boss Drazen Anzulovic by mutual consent last week following the team’s heavy defeat to CSKA Moscow in the VTB United League and on Monday handed the reins back to their former coach Aleksandar Trifunovic.

The Serbian, who coached Lietuvos Rytas from 2006-08, will be assisted by none other than Maskoliunas.

Lietuvos Rytas are 1-0 in the LKL.

With Anzulovic’s assistant Roberts Stelmahers coaching the team, they beat Nevezis 83-71 on Saturday.

Lithuania international Martynas Gecevicius tore apart the opposition, pouring in 25 points.

He drilled all five of his shots from long range.

Zalgiris are now coached by Aco Petrovicius and they have won three consecutive games to start the LKL campaign, the last an 80-74 triumph on Saturday over Rudupis.
