Lisa Thomaidis, Canadian women's national team part ways

MIAMI (United States) - Lisa Thomaidis will no longer be in charge of the Canada’s women's basketball team after her contract expires at the end of September. The coach and the national federation decided to part ways after nine successful years.

Thomaidis was appointed head coach in 2013 and has since led the Canadian national team to fourth place in the FIBA ​​World Ranking, the highest in program history.

“Leading our Canadian Senior Women’s National Team over the last nine years has been the highest honour and an absolute privilege. Our accomplishments have been historic and ones that took working with a true team to achieve. Ultimately, I want to thank all the athletes, coaches, and staff who I had the privilege of working with over the years. It will be the relationships formed and connections made along this journey that I will always cherish. Through everyone’s passion and dedication, we elevated our program to where it is today. As I step aside, I do so with immense pride and satisfaction knowing that I gave everything I had to the program,” Thomaidis said in a statement.

The Ontario native led the North American team to two consecutive Olympic appearances (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020). She also led them to fifth place in the 2014 FIBA ​​Women's World Cup, the country's second-best result at the tournament.

Her record also includes gold medals at the 2015 Pan American Games, FIBA ​​Americas Championship for Women in 2015, and the 2017 FIBA ​​Women’s AmeriCup. Thomaidis leaves the team with an impressive 83-44 record.
