TRIPOLI (Libya) - Libya has announced that former NBA guard Sam Vincent will coach the country's national team at the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket.
Vincent is an NBA champion with the Boston Celtics. He has held a number of coaching positions across Africa.
He was in charge of South Africa's MBB in 2025 Basketball Africa League (BAL) Nile Conference in May and was part of Rwanda's APR coaching staff during the league's playoffs in June in Pretoria, South Africa.
Vincent coached Nigeria's men and women's national teams and also coached the Senegalese men's team for a short time.
He led Nigeria to win the 2017 FIBA Women's AfroBasket title in Bamako, Mali.
In 2004, Vincent was the coach of Nigeria's women's basketball team at the Olympics in Athens. The team won a game, which was the first time an African team had won in the Olympics. They beat the Korean team.
The 62-year-old coach replaces Fouad Abou Chacra, who led Libya to an impressive 4-2 record in the 2025 AfroBasket qualifiers before leading Al Ahli Tripoli to the 2025 BAL title. He also won the Coach of the Year award.
Contacted by FIBA.basketball, About Chacra confirmed that he needed some time to rest with his family.
This year's AfroBasket will be Libya's first appearance in the competition since they hosted the event in 2009.
The 24th edition of the FIBA Africa Championship will take place from August 12 to August 26.
