DAMMAM (UFSA Cup) - The first ever basketball tournament to be sponsored by DCF Cargo & Fowarders opened with a big bang at the Al Fozan Astrodome with United Filipino Sports Association (UFSA) standing as the organizing committee.
A total of 14 teams joined the opening parade where Al Zamil Plastc Company took the Best Team Uniform Plum, while Al Iman Gasket and Astra Polymers shared honors as Runner Ups.
The opening ceremony was graced by Jing Dahug, DCF Cargo & Forwaders General Manager and Mohsin Salim, Al Barshaq Company Marketing Manager.
"DCF Cargo is pleased to support the most loved sports activity of Filipinos - basketball", Jing Dahug, who traveled all the way from the capital city, Riyadh, said in his speech.
"I would like to congratulate the Organizing Committee headed by Fahad Quiban and UFSA Commissioner Abdul Aziz Big J Dizon for the successful opening and to all the particpating teams who joined in this event", said Mohsin Salim of Al Barshaq Company.
During the opening salvo, Honnie Al Rumaih and Jun Jun Escoto contributed big plays down the stretch to lead Al Rumaih Furniture to a come-from-behind 59-49 win over the mighty Aziz European on this festive Friday afternoon.
In what served as the turning point of the match, Al Rumaih and Escoto toiled on a two-man game for furniture maker game-winning bucket.
Working from the pick and roll, Al Rumaih set a high screen for Escoto. With wingman Gil Banag attempting to switch on the defense, Al Rumaih gave the ball to Escoto, who exploded from the corner.
The Aziz European squad, on the other hand, shelled Al Rumaih's with consecutive baskets in the third quarter courtesy of Leslie Ilag, Richard Trinidad, Hemdrech Bulambao and Jojo Beltran after trailing by as much as six points in the first half.
Honnie Al Rumaih led all scorers with 22 points while Jun Jun Escoto and Gil Banag chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively.
In another match, DCF Cargo shattered the dreams of Al Iman Gasket, 63-60, but passed through the proverbial 'eye of a needle' with 8 deadlocks.
Al Iman five dropped 8-0 bomb courtesy of slotman Celso Managa and Orly Quinones with their gravity defying shots and lane penetrations. But DCF squad clawed back in the final quarter when Neri Napoles tied the ball game 50all with 5:30 remaining.
Both teams traded baskets in the remaining minutes of the game, Mark Ortiz took care of DCF's outside snipings, Ricky Garces made the perimeter his domain. Bench tactician Mario Lorenzo has more up its sleeve as Napoles pounded the boards with 12 caroms and 18 points while diminutive guard Jason Salise chipped in 10 points.
With their inconsistent outside threat, as expected, Al Iman Gasket relied heavily on its main-man James Mark Kalaw. But Kalaw can only do as much when playing without relief and guarded alternately by two to three defenders everytime he touches the ball.
Sensing fatigue on his prized big man, coach Joseph Biclar momentarily succeeded on an experiment to give shooters Jojo Umiten, and Aurelio Morales the green light as the Al Iman five started to connect from inside and managed to hold off DCF breakaway and closed in at 62-60 with 0.18 seconds left in the match.
Al Iman's Aurelio Morales became unlikely hero when he released a three point play in a buzzer - beater, but the ball just touch the ring and fouled by DCF's Sammy Reambonanza.
With no time left and everybody in the jam-packed Al Fozan Astrodome, Morales missed those three free throws, an deny his team a win.
