South Korea won the Asian women's basketball championship for the first time in eight years on Sunday with a 79-73 win over China in the final.

The victory in the 22nd FIBA Asia Championship for Women was South Korea's first since it won the 14th tournament in Japan in 1999.

This year's tournament was held from June 3 in Incheon, a coastal city 40 kilometers west of Seoul.

"I'm pleased that we gained a ticket to the 2008 Beijing Olympic games by winning all of our qualifying games," Yoo Su-jong, coach of the South Korean team, told reporters in an interview after the game.
On Saturday, South Korea beat Taiwan and qualified for the basketball tournament of the Beijing Olympics, which will be its fourth consecutive Olympic appearance.

In the earlier third-place game, Japan beat Taiwan 73-70.
