SANTIAGO (Chile) – Canada’s Kayla Alexander made history on Wednesday during her country’s 82-46 victory over the Dominican Republic at Centro de Deportes Colectivos in Santiago, Chile. The 34-year-old grabbed 11 rebounds, allowing her to rise to No. 2 in the Women’s AmeriCup modern era rebounding list. "I'm kind of shocked to be completely honest, but I just tried to do whatever my teammates needed me to do, and I feel like rebounding is actually one of my strengths,” she said in a postgame interview. “So yeah, I'm glad that any time I can get a board, that helps contribute, whether it's another offense possession or getting a stop that helps the team.”
Alexander now has 211 boards, surpassing compatriot Kim Gaucher as the top Canadian on the modern era list (since 2003) and getting within 33 rebounds of Brazil’s Erika De Souza’s 244— a record that is now within reach in this 2025 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup edition as Canada has now advanced to the Quarter-Finals. "Honestly, I just try to lead by example, through my experience, through playing, but also, I got to give credit to my teammates, though, because I have some teammates who can get on that board,” she added. “Yvonne (Ejim), she's been having an incredible tournament, getting on the rebounds, so I'm sure she's probably going to break that record sometime soon.” Alexander got this done in 23 AmeriCup games played across four editions since playing in one for the first time, in 2019 in Puerto Rico. She also boasts 10 double-doubles after picking up another one on Wednesday and is closing on the Top 10 in scoring while sitting at 261 points. Agostina Burani of Argentina has now been demoted to third on the list, right behind Alexander at 201. Burani enters her Quarter-Final game on Friday with 201 rebounds.
