TOKYO (FIBA East Asia Tournament) - NBA hopeful Yuta Tabuse has left Japan’s national squad ahead of the FIBA East Asian Tournament to take part in a two-day mini-camp with the Dallas Mavericks.
Tabuse, 1.73m point guard, had a short stint in 2004 with Phoenix before being waived but he has never given up on his dream of making it in the league.
"I got the news all of a sudden but I am happy that I was able to get an opportunity in this way,” Tabuse said.
“I will be put to the test again.
"I will meet this challenge with confidence. I have nothing to lose. My speed translates in the NBA, but I need to work on one-on-one match-ups and my shooting ability.”
The Mavs’ mini-camp is to be held June 11-12.
Tabuse, now 28, spent last season in the JBL with the Tochigi Brex.
He did not play for Japan when they hosted the 2006 FIBA World Championship but a chance to earn a spot in David Hobbs’ team that is attempting to qualify for the FIBA Asia Championship.
To do that, Japan must claim a top two finish in Nagoya where the FIBA East Asia event gets underway on June 10.
