TIANJIN (FIBA Asia Championship) - Japan overpowered Kuwait 78-51 and kept their hopes of earning a quarterfinal berth from Group E eight-final round on Tuesday.

Japan, who finished eighth when they hosted the FIBA Asia Championship two years ago, are now 1-3 in Group E and a win against Chinese Taipei on the morrow will boost their chances of playing the quarterfinals.

Kuwait sank to 0-4 and confined to playing the 9-12 classification.

That Kuwait scored their first points – via Mohammad Ashkanani’s drive in the lane – only 1:14 into the second quarter spoke for the overwhelming Japanese superiority on their rivals.

Japan had by then scored 20 points and rolled ahead.

Tomoo Amino led Japan’s scoring with 17 points.

Takehiko Orimo chipped in with 12 points.

Rashed Alrabah was the only Kuwait player with double-digit score – with 10 points.
