With the late withdrawal of Brazil of their men's and women's team due to financial problems INAB-FID Technical Delegate Fausto Pereira was faced with a difficult decision on how to proceed. After consolation with the Host Organization and the teams it was agreed to have all five women's teams play in a single round robin with finals and the men to play in two groups with a medal round and a consolation round. All agreed that this was the fairest way to proceed for the benefit of the teams.
Men - In the first game of day one Portugal ranked one in the world defeated the host nation Japan by a score of 108-36. Top scorers for Portugal were Ricardo Martins with 39 points and Carlos Luz with 21. Scoring for Japan were Tsue Shohei, 10, and Yuutchiro Nakagawa, Makoto and Takaeumt Nakano with 6 points each.
In game two Australia defeated Greece (64-62) in over time. Adam Meredith topped Australia's scoring with 19 points followed by Nicholas Maroney with 18. Zografakis Thrasyvoulos with 22 including 8 of the last 10 was tops for Greece followed by Burnham Glen with 11.
Poland defeated South Africa (119 - 47) in the third game of the day. Top scoreres were Tadeusz Truszczynski and Tomas Madej with 20 each and Tomas Macholl with 16 for Poland and Mxolisi Xhosa with 17 and Thato Morwe with 11 for South Africa.
Women - Poland defeated host Japan 100-48 on scoring from Honorate Fujawa (28) Monika Styba (22) and Karolina Latuszek (21).Top scorer for Japan was Nodoka Hataguichi (18).
In the second women's game Russia defeated Mexico 53 - 42. Russia top scorers were Ekaterina Kaminova with 15 and Natalya Chekulaeva with 13. Scoring for Mexico were Gizella Mercz with 20 and Cira Castaneda with 18.
In women's day two play Australia beat Japan 86 - 32 on the strength of 19 points from Kim Perry and 14 each from Lisa Mackie and Christine Maynard. Scoring for Japan were Nodoka Hataguchi with 8 and 5 each from Mika Ohazama and Haruna Kanda.
Russia won over Poland 90 - 76. Scoring for Russia were Ksenia Khokhlova (31), Ekaterina Kaminova (28) and Natalya Chekulaeva (15)
In men's play Portugal won over Australia 58 - 44 on the strength of shooting from Alcides Ferandes (25) and Ricardo Martins (13). For Australia Nicholas Maroney, Devin Carracher and Evan Johnson with 8 points each.
Greece outlasted Japan in a close game 63 - 61. Georgios Makridis (18) was the top scorer for Greece with 12 of his points from beyond the three point line. Dmitrios Zografakis added 15 more for Greece. Shohei Tsue with 20 and Yuichiro Nakagawa 18 were tops for Japan.
The final game of the day saw Russia defeat South Africa 116 -61. Scoring for Russia were Sergey Sorokin with a game hish 38, Alexandr Ogurtsov with 23 and Artur Melkonyan 17. Thato Morwe was high scorer for South Africa with 33 points in a losing cause.
