    GENEVA (FIBA) - It is with deep sadness that the world of basketball has learned about the death of the President of the Japanese Basketball Association, Mr Kihachiro Onitsuka.

    Mr. Onitsuka has passed away on Saturday at the age of 89 after suffering from a pulmonary disease since beginning of this year and his wife Tsune was at his side when he deceased.

    Mr. Onitsuka was devoted to the game of basketball all of his life. He was the President of the Organising Committee of the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan, one of the best ever FIBA events in the history of basketball.

    FIBA wishes to express its deepest condolences to his wife Tsune and his family.
