MILAN (Coppa Italia) - Holders Eldo Napoli will face a stern test of their credentials when they open their Coppa Italia title defence against Lega A leaders Montepaschi Siena.

The two sides were paired against each other at Monday’s draw in Milan.

Napoli lost leading scorer Lynn Greer to the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks but qualified for the prestigious event with 10 wins from their 17 games.

Piero Bucchi’s men have received terrific play from Ansu Sesay, Michel Morandais and Italy international Mason Rocca - all members of last year’s team.

Napoli also go into this week’s Euroleague game against Benetton Treviso still in contention for a place in the Top 16 of that competition.
    Montepaschi (14-3) won their regular-season encounter 80-77.

Whirlpool Varese (10-7) secured their place in the event on Sunday with a narrow victory over Virtus Bologna (13-4).

Those two sides will meet in the first round of the Coppa with Virtus, the Coppa hosts, starting as favourites.

One of this year’s surprise packages in Italy, newly-promoted Premiata Montegranaro (9-8) take on Armani Jeans Milano (11-6) while defending Lega A champions, Benetton, go up against Lottomatica Rome in the most attractive tie of the first round.

The Treviso outfit lost key players from last year’s team and have been beset by injuries, yet they are still 10-7 while Lottomatica Roma (9-8) have played very well in January.
