NAPLES (Lega A) – Coppa Italia champions Carpisa Napoli have some silverware already this season but they are hungry for more as they showed against Benetton Treviso on Sunday.
Leading 53-50 at the end of the third quarter, Carpisa blew out their visitors over the final 10 minutes and walked off the court 73-63 winners.
The result has left the Napoli club level with Montepaschi Siena and Benetton on 17 wins and seven defeats in Lega A - a game behind Climamio Bologna who are alone in first place after beating Bipop Carire Reggio Emilia.
James Larranaga put Carpisa on their way in the fourth quarter with a three-pointer at the start and then Mason Rocca added a pair of free throws to make it 58-50.
After Matteo Soragna scored to close the gap to six, Rocca replied with a basket and following a Drew Nicholas miss, Valerio Spinelli reeled off eight straight points with two three-pointers sandwiching a shot from inside the arc.
Carpisa took their lead to 68-52 midway through the fourth quarter and Benetton never recovered.
Ansu Sesay had 15 points and three other Napoli stars finished in double figures, inclulding Lega A’s top scorer Lynn Greer although he finished well below his average of 22.5 points with just 11.
Climamio got a late three-pointer from Slovenian Sani Becirovic to beat Bipop 97-96.
The visitors had taken a 96-94 advantage over Climamio after a basket from Luca Infante but Becirovic, who will play for his country at the FIBA World Championship, had the perfect reply.
On Saturday, Preston Shumpert poured in 22 points to lead Armani
Jeans Milano past joint leaders Montepaschi Siena.
Carlo Recalcati`s team allowed Milano to score 30 points over the final 10 minutes as they ran out 86-73 winners.
The winners are trying to turn around their disappointing season which saw them bow out of Euroleague in the group stage and crash out of the Coppa Italia in the first round.
They are in eighth place with 15 wins and nine defeats - two victories clear of Whirlpool Varese.
Basket Livorno won 104-67 over Roseto Basket on Friday.
