TEL AVIV (Record) - Israeli Anat Draygor is set to make the Guinness Book of Records after recording 136 points in one game, almost single-handedly guiding Hapoel Mate Yehuda to a 158-41 rout of Elitzur Givat Shmuel.
Having just celebrated her 46th birthday, Draygor continues to tear up the third division with Mate Yehuda. She plays mostly for fun, but her experience and outstanding ability ensure the opposition do not get to enjoy themselves quite so much.
To mark her birthday, her coach and team-mates came up with the idea of helping Draygor set a new record. Draygor was positioned at the top of the team's zone defense to give her more chances to score quick points in fast breaks.
The plan worked to perfection.
By half-time she already had 61 points, and added another 75 after the interval to reach the historic tally.
The club plan to submit the official game sheet to the Guinness Book of World Records to have it officially recognised as the highest ever score of a single player.
The total of 136 points represented one every 17.6 seconds, or 3.4 points every minute.
"To think that I had to score every 20 seconds is insane," Draygor told "Ma'ariv Daily" after the game. "I was so tired at the end of the game I started to run like a duck.
"Our goal was to break the world record," she added, and thanked her point guard, Shira Givon, who came up with the idea. Giron could well have set a new world record for assists in the game, but no official statistics were kept for that.
An Israeli has held this particular record before. Orna Ostfeld set a new mark with 108 points in a single game while playing for Ramat Khen in the early 1980s.
Ostfeld is a now a successful coach, guiding Anda Ramat Hasharon to the EuroCup Final Four in 2005.
