LAUSANNE (AISTS) - The second edition of the AISTS Sport Management Seminar for Women, held from June 5-8 2006 in Lausanne, Switzerland, was yet again a resounding success.

The seminar provided the unique opportunity for women to take part in a comprehensive education programme to help them reach higher positions in the sports world, as well as share this amazing experience with other women from all over the globe.

This year, 55 participants attended including Mrs Santi Suter from FIBA, representing 42 countries and coming mainly from National Olympic Committees, National and International Sports Federations. Once more Olympic Solidarity gave invaluable support by awarding 21 scholarships to participants coming from NOCs.

The allotment was as follows: 5 to African NOCs, 4 to the Americas, 6 to Asian NOCs, and 6 to European NOCs.

The participants’ came from NOCs (68%), from National Federations (6.8%), and from International Federations (18%).

The group was composed of managers and project managers (40%), assistants and secretaries (37.7%), and directors and presidents (22%).

Lilamani de Soysa, initiator of the project and Project Manager at the International Table Tennis Federation did a wonderful job facilitating the seminar.

The programme was composed of different topics divided over 4 days.

The main topics were “Leadership and Gender”, in which Professor Antonakis from the Business School (HEC) University of Lausanne spoke about stereotyping and leadership, gender in culture, the role congruity theory, prejudice towards female leaders, female and male leader’s gender differences in organizations.

“Communication”, with Kerry Choun from BCD, who spoke about the essentials of communication skills and the importance of the presentation as well as the structure of the speech.

“Sports Marketing, Sponsorship and Media Management” presented by Bjorn Walliser from the University of Nancy II in France, who spoke about marketing through sport and of sport, the sponsorship process and the marketing process.

Dr. June Canavan from Australia inspired and encouraged the participants with her presentation on “Gender Issues in Sport” and the development of women in sport.

Project Management was done using a computer programme called Simultrain where the participants had to work in groups.

The City of Lausanne was the main sponsor and “Lausanne Tourisme” helped us with the enrolments, transport and hotel bookings for all participants.

The IOC hosted the cocktail for the Opening Ceremony, which was held on the terrace of the Olympic Museum in Ouchy. The ceremony included a welcome message from Ms. Katia Mascagni (Head of Relations with International Organizations and Cooperation, IOC) and Mrs.

Joanna Zipser-Graves (Project Manager, NOC management Programmes, Olympic Solidarity, IOC), where they spoke about the IOC promotion of women in sport.

A brilliant performance by the young violinist Dessislava Tcholakova from Bulgaria, enlivened the ceremony. Besides the classes and workshops, additional activities were organized, such as an evening sports session along the shores of the Lac Léman; the Montreux Volley Masters (International Women’s Volleyball tournament) with a cocktail in the VIP tent; the International Cycling Union (UCI) and the World Cycling Center in Aigle with different presentations from the staff including a visit of the facilities, where some participants had the chance to try out track cycling.

The Closing Ceremony was also held at the UCI where all participants received their diploma from the hands of UCI President Pat McQuaid after the dinner at the restaurant “La Musette’’.

This seminar will be held again next year around the same dates. We encourage all International Sports Federations including their national federations and NOCs to use this platform to educate future women sports leaders.

The programme will remain similar for 2007 and the following years we will focus on specific areas to cover other topics of interest.
