LEON (México) – After Day 1 and 2 at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup 2026, all eight participating national teams remain in contention for a spot at next year's FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup. With the new competition format in place, the battle for the four World Cup berths has become even more interesting.

    How does qualification work?

    • The first-place team in each group advances directly to the Semi-Finals.

    • The fourth-place teams move into the classification games for fifth through eighth place.

    • The second- and third-place teams cross over in the Quarter-Finals (2A vs. 3B and 2B vs. 3A).

The winners of those Quarter-Final matchups will advance to the Semi-Finals alongside the group winners. The four semi-finalists will automatically qualify for the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup. In other words, finishing first in the group offers a significant advantage: it avoids the Quarter-Final round and leaves a team just one win away from securing a World Cup berth.

What does the current picture look like?

In Group A, the United States (2-0) sits atop the standings after defeating Argentina (88-58) and Mexico (107-50). Their point differential puts the team in a strong position to finish first in the group. Argentina and Brazil are both 1-1, but Argentina owns the head-to-head advantage after edging their South American rival 84-83. Meanwhile, Mexico (0-2) still has a chance to improve their position on Thursday. In Group B, Canada (2-0) has been impressive and consistent, defeating Venezuela (105-51) and the Dominican Republic (100-79). The Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico will enter the third game with identical 1-1 records, but the Dominicans hold the head-to-head edge following their 100-71 victory. Venezuela, like Mexico, needs a win and then will have to wait and see how the remaining results unfold.

    What's at stake?

The final day of the Group Phase will be crucial in determining which teams advance directly to the Semi-Finals and which ones will have to take the more difficult route through the Quarter-Finals. The United States and Canada hold the upper hand to secure first place in their respective groups. However, Argentina, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Venezuela still have plenty to show before the knockout bracket is finalized. With all of that in mind, we want to hear from you. Vote in our poll:
