GS Petroliers claim sixth straight Algerian League title
ALGIERS (FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women) - Groupement Sportif des Petroliers retained the Algerian Women's Basketball League title for the sixth time in a row.
ALGIERS (FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women) - Groupement Sportif des Petroliers retained the Algerian Women's Basketball League title for the sixth time in a row thanks to a 2-0 success in a best-of-three final series against Hussein-Dey Marines (HDM).
Following a 76-67 win in Game 1, the Algiers-based side rallied from a 30-17 halftime deficit to secure a much-needed 63-53 triumph.
An established dominant force in Algerian women's basketball over the past decade, GS Petroliers not only defended the country's most important women's basketball title for the staggering sixth straight time, but they also clinched the trophy for the ninth time in a decade.
GS Petroliers head coach Hakim Meddour dedicated the victory to his players: "We knew that Game 2 was going to be difficult and we were going to suffer, which was the case, especially because of HDM defense. However, we believed all along, and we came up victorious. The most important thing is that we were able to achieve our goal. I congratulate my players for their effort. They have come a long way to win. "
Meanwhile, Hussein-Dey Marines' head coach Mokrane Benabbas, said: "We had a good start to the game, and we seemed on route to a deserved victory, but it wasn't enough."
With the win, GS Petroliers earned a spot in the FIBA Africa Zone 1 Qualifiers for the FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women (ACCW) 2018 to be held later this year.
But before they try and grab a spot in the annual ACCW, the Algerian champions will face Hussein-Dey Marines in the Algerian Cup Final on June 8.
