Despite opening loss, hosts hold hopes

SEREMBAN (Malaysia) – Group C action in at Karisma Arena didn’t begin well for the home fans with Malaysia going down 54-77 after giving it their all against Hong Kong China in the FIBA Asia Cup 2029 Pre-Qualifiers on Friday.

The proceedings had begun with Indonesia handing Singapore an 80-54 rout.

Hong Kong China and Malaysia played the first three quarters of the encounter giving no quarter and seeking none, although the latter seem to hold the mental edge with the familiarity of playing at home a seeming advantage.

Pok Yuet Yeung and Oliver Xu had other ideas in the Hong Kong China stables.

The two joined forces scoring four points apiece thus marshalling the team to score the first 13 points of the final period, that helped them steer the contest in their favour.

The duo went on to combine for 25 points and 17 rebounds for the game to give the East Asian team the victory with reigning BCL Asia-East 2026 MVP Glen Yang leading their scoring with 19 points.

Veteran Chun Hong Ting had kept Malaysia’s hopes alive with 13 points.

Zachary Jian-Kai Helzer’s jumper opened the scoring for the game but that was only temporary and short-lived moment of bliss Singapore enjoyed in the game.

Indonesia soon took over and controlled the proceedings swelling their lead with almost with every exchange.

Yudha Saputera’s 16 points led Indonesia.

Jay Shay Lin’s game-high 19 points went in vain for Singapore.

Indonesia next take on Hong Kong on Sunday followed by Malaysia taking on Singapore.
