But with the league points secured, Paul James and his squad can now focus fully on next Tuesday’s historic ULEB Cup opener against KK Bosna in Sarajevo.

It is sure to be an exciting winter for the club and their supporters as Heat match up against five of Europe’s elite sides in the first home and away group stage.

Also in Guildford’s way will be top Spanish club DKV Joventut, Germans Alba Berlin, Siauliai of Lithuania and Turkish outfit Turk Telekom.

Heat marketing director Phil Hardy admitted: “We consider it an honour to be competing as British champions at this level in a sport which, in most countries around the world, enjoys a fanatical popularity and extensive media coverage.” He went on: “ULEB Cup games will provide valuable experience to British players as momentum for the London Olympics builds.

“It also offers a chance for fans from Surrey and the rest of the country to see of basketball’s greatest starts including world champion Rudy Fernandez and the phenomenal Ricky Rubio of Joventut and Berlin’s ex-NBA guard/forward Dijon Thompson.”

In Heat’s final match before their European campaign, they were grateful to Danny Gilbert.

He led all scorers in the game with 26 points, two more than Sam Bradley for Capital. Tony Dorsey chipped in with 18 for Heat while Brian Dux – now back in the fold after injury – and Dean Williams both notched 15.

Heat led 45-43 at half time, eight consecutive points from Gilbert being the key. They pulled eight clear going into the final quarter only for Capital to hit back to square it at 79-79. Heat responded though and a 7-0 tear set up the victory
