    GRE - Fifth FIBA Appearance at Sportaccord

    GENEVA (FIBA) - Sportaccord, an international convention that assembles every year the most important decision makers of the sports world, took place this year in Athens Greece.

    GENEVA (FIBA) - Sportaccord, an international convention that assembles every year the most important decision makers of the sports world, took place this year in Athens Greece.

    The IOC and AGFIS, as well as the Olympic summer and winter sport federations met from 2 – 6 June in the Greek capital.

    FIBA Secretary General and IOC member Patrick Baumann and FIBA President Bob Elphinstion led the FIBA delegation and attended various meetings with their fellow colleagues from other International Federations and with the IOC Executive Board.

    Meetings were also held with representatives from Singapore, the Organizers of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games and with representatives from the bidding cities for the 2016 Olympic Games.

    All cities presented their plans for the Olympic basketball tournaments in 2016.

    Parts of the convention are presentations and discussion forums that deal with actual issues of the sports business.

    The convention gives also a forum to all members of the Olympic family to be present with a booth at an exhibition center.

    After the Lausanne, Berlin, Seoul and Beijing editions of Sportaccord, FIBA has been present for the fifth time with a booth.

    The Greek Sports minister, Mr. Ioannidis, former well known Greek basketball coach, paid a courtesy visit to the FIBA leaders at FIBA’s booth.

    On the margin of Sportaccord, the Vice-President of FIBA and President of FIBA Europe, Mr. George Vassilakopoulos, hosted a dinner for the FIBA delegation.

    The next edition of Sportaccord will take place in Denver, Colorado, in March 2009.
