NICOSIA (FIBA World Championship) - Greece international Sofoklis Schortsanitis has signed a two-year contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv.
“Big Sofo” took time out from Greece’s preparations for the FIBA World Championship to meet with Maccabi coach David Blatt in Cyprus - where Greece have been playing warm-up games - and hammer out the terms of his deal.
The 6ft 10in 345-pound Schortsanitis was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers back in 2003 and at one stage had looked to be finally heading to the NBA this summer, while also being linked with Panathinaikos and Valencia.
Last season, he averaged 9.0 points and 3.4 rebounds in 13.4 minutes a game for Olympiacos.
Big Sofo has been a regular in the Greece squad since earning his first cap at the age of 2003.
He was on the team that took silver at the 2006 FIBA World Championship, and also played at the 2008 Olympic Games.
At last year’s EuroBasket, he averaged 11.9 points and 3.4 rebounds as Greece won bronze in Poland.
