BAMBERG (Bundesliga) - Germany playmaker Steffen Hamann has announced he has agreed a deal with an Italian club.
Hamann, 25, has been at his hometown team Bamberg Brose Baskets since 1997, and has progressed from the youth side to a full German international.
Although his destination has not been officially announced, it is believed to be Climamio Bologna.
He said: "I have a lot to thank the Bamberg program for, and I think I gave back a lot of that. I always gave my all for the team and we celebrated some great success together.
"I am convinced that this step will help me in my career and personally. And I'm looking forward to the challenges and impressions of a new city."
Hamann, who is currently with his national team preparing for the FIBA World Championship in Japan, helped turn Bamberg from a struggling club into champions in 2005.
The team was also finalists in 2003 and 2004 and semi-finalists last season.
Dirk Bauermann, who coached Hamann at Bamberg as well as with the national team, said: "It hurts a lot to let a player like Steffen Hamann go. On the other hand, you have a certain pride knowing you helped him along his way.
"The time for a new challenge had come for him, and we have to accept that."
Bamberg managing director Wolfgang Heyder said: "He always gave 100% for the success of the team and as a young German national team player he was an identification figure for Bamberg basketball fans."
Hamann's departure leaves Bamberg searching for a new point guard. The club is also looking for a combo-guard and an all-rounder.
