HAMBURG (FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Men) – Joel Anthony poured in 22 points and Carl English came off the bench to score 20 as Canada beat Germany 91-86 on Wednesday in Hamburg.
American-born Chris Kaman, the recently naturalized German who plays with the Los Angeles Clippers, joined his new national team and sat on the bench but did not play.
Germany will be in a race against time to get him ready for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament next week where both they and Canada will attempt to earn a place for the Beijing Games.
Newfoundland’s Carl English was excellent. He came off the bench and played 27 minutes.
The swingman’s biggest shot was a three-pointer with under two minutes left in the game that provided some separation from the host team.
“They were a great test for us and each step is getting us ready for Greece,” said English, who drilled five of 11 shots from three-point range.
“We know they’ll come out harder next game.”
The two sides play again on Friday.
Dirk Nowitzki had a game-high 33 points in defeat for Germany, who take on New Zealand and Cape Verde in Group B at next week’s qualifying event.
If, as expected, they finish in the top two, the Germans would face Greece, Brazil or Lebanon in the quarter-finals.
Canada take on Korea and Slovenia in Group C and face a potential quarter-final against Croatia, Puerto Rico or Cameroon.
