HAMBURG (FIBA U17 World Championship /Youth Olympic Games) - The side event schedule of the FIBA U17 World Championship is well worth a look. Among these events, taking place at the Sporthalle Wandsbek there’s a big 3 on 3 tournament being held until Wednesday.

This event was officially opened by FIBA President Bob Elphinston and the President of the German basketball Federation Ingo Weiss.

The 15 participating teams have come from the world over to take part in a tournament that is seen as preparation for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG), which will be held in Singapore between 14th and 26th August.

Named FIBA 33, this new exciting format has been designed to unify and structure the many forms of basketball commonly known as “Streetball”. With a ten-second shot clock, designed to ensure fast en exciting play, the game is played with one referee on a half court. The first team to reach 33 points or, should neither reach that total – the leading team after the second of the two five-minute period, wins the game.

The two tournaments – there’s a boy’s and a girl’s championship – includes teams from the Czech Republic, Russia, Israel, Angola, the Central African Republic, South Africa, New Zealand, South Africa, as well as a number of German teams.

FIBA President Bob Elphinston said of the event: “This is a great initiative by the German Basketball Federation and I would like to congratulate them.

“From what I saw there is some great talent on show and our new format has had nothing but positive feedback. I expect FIBA 33 to be very popular in top level competition as well as in parks or wherever there’s a hoop and a backboard.”
