ANKARA (EuroBasket 2009) – Germany coach Dirk Bauermann was giddy over his young team’s third-place finish at the Efes Pilsen World Cup.
Despite the absence of NBA stars Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Kaman in his squad this summer, the mood is upbeat for Germany with their EuroBasket opener in Poland against France tipping off in less than a week.
National team coach Dirk Bauermann praised his players after two wins and a third-place finish at the Efes Pilsen World Cup in Ankara.
"This third place at this high class tournament is a great success for this young team," Bauermann said.
He was particularly happy with Germany's comeback in the third-place game against the Latvians, a team they will meet in Group B.
Kestutis Kemzura’s side had opened the contest by building a 25-18 advantage only for Germany to trail by just one at half-time and then outscore the Baltic team 29-14 in the third quarter en route to an 89-72 triumph.
"We came back strong after a bad start and showed our true character," Bauermann said.
"As for the EuroBasket, this win is a joyful result but it does not change our goals.
"Every win with this young team will be a huge success."
Germany will face a very difficult opener on September 7 in Poland as they go up against Tony Parker and Co.
In addition to the French and Latvians, the Germans will also go up against defending European champions Russia in Group B.
If the Germans finish in the top six, they will qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.
