LONDON (BBL) - Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles have won the BBL Championship Play-off Final at the Basketball Finals Weekend. They beat Scottish Phoenix Honda Record Rocks 83-68 at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham on Sunday evening.
It is the second successive Play-off triumph for the Eagles, who beat Chester Jets in last season’s Final. This success also sees them complete the clean sweep of domestic honours this season, repeating the feat of the Jets in the 2001/02 season and becoming only the third club to ever achieve it.
Eagles also boast Coach of the Year Fabulous Flournoy and Player of the Year Andrew Sullivan, who both received their awards at today’s Finals Weekend.
Flournoy was also the game’s star man with an impressive double-double of 17 points and 17 rebounds. The latter equalled a BBL Championship Final record and enough to give him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Eagles Head Coach Fab Flournoy commented, “It‘s a great feeling. It was a tough game and Rocks deserve a lot of credit, but I‘m proud of my guys. It‘s been a hard season, but a great one.”
It was a disappointing end for Rocks’ Coach Steve Swanson, who now leaves the club after three years to take up a high profile coaching position in the US with Idaho State University.
