LONDON (2012 Olympics) - Former NBA star John Amaechi will be part of a huge celebration in London next week as the final countdown begins for the 2012 Olympic Games.

The ex-England international will put on a skills clinic on July 27 as part of a day-long series of events to mark two years to go until the Games open in London.

Amaechi, who was born in the United States but raised in Manchester, has been taking part in a series of events to promote basketball ahead of the Olympics.

Officials are hoping to use the Games to take the sport to the next level in Britain, and have been aided by the fantastic development of the national team, who created a program out of virtually nothing a few years ago but qualified for last year’s EuroBasket.

No members of the current team will be present as they are hard at work preparing for their EuroBasket 2011 qualifying program, but Amaechi, who played for Cleveland, Orlando and Utah, can be relied upon to put on a show.

He will be one of a series of athletes testing out the facilities under construction in East London, with sprinter Michael Johnson also due to run.
