As part of their effort in developing sports in the Gambia, Unity for kids Academy, Gambia chapter, an international organisation based in the Netherlands recently inaugurated a new basketball lawn in New Jeshwang.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Madam Anneke Meijer, President of Unity For Kids Academy revealed that his organisation set up the Gambia Chapter in 2000 thanks to the support from her husband Mr. Babucarr Cham, a Gambian.
She added that presently the Foundation has over 850 kids in the United Kingdom as the result of hard work they have been doing in empowering children.
She pointed out that they have invited 28 young Gambians to undergo training to become professional Basketball, Volleyball players and coaches.
Mrs. Meijer noted that Unity for Kids is presently supporting the school fees of many kids in the academy including those from poor family backgrounds.
“On education, Unity for Kids has established a skill training center in London corner,” she said.
Mrs., Meijer pointed out that they have plans to set up carpentry and welding workshops to help Gambian children.
“We are also working with children with disabilities,” she concluded.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the Manager Unity for Kids-Gambia chapter, Saikou Faye said the benefit received by Gambian children from the foundation could not be over emphasized.
Mr. Faye revealed that so far the foundation has established four academies in the Gambia namely Gunjur, Bakoteh, Tanji and Jeshwang.
