FRA - Turiaf thankful but out of his element

LYON (LNB) - Ronny Turiaf is trying to make the most out of a tough situation that the NBA lockout has caused for him and a lot of other professional basketball players.

Having played in the NBA for several years since graduating from Gonzaga in 2005, America has become home for the 28-year-old France international.

Because of the NBA lockout, though, Turiaf, is one of many to have signed to play in Europe.

He wants to remain sharp in case the lockout ends, and also be in form when next year's Olympics are held in London.

The 2.08m center, who didn't play at the EuroBasket because of a hand injury, has the luxury of being a teammate of fellow France star Tony Parker at ASVEL.

"It's always happy," he said of what it's like to be on the same court with Parker.

"We can play together with our eyes closed.

"We've played together for 14 years."

Then there is the opportunity to compete again under ASVEL boss Pierre Vincent, a coach Turiaf played for when he was younger.

"It's been a long time since we played under the same orders," Turiaf said.

"Master Cyclopede as we call him is his usual self.

"He's someone who's brought me a lot and can always bring more.

"The choice to come to ASVEL was easy when you take account of those two personalities/people."

Turiaf does think about returning to the United States, though.

"I'll be honest," he said.

"The Villeurbanne adventure is very interesting and gives me a lot in terms of human values, but I am out of my element.

"I miss not having my habits and notably I miss not having my dog with me. I miss him. That might make some laugh, but not me."

"Not to be with my mother...I miss her, too.
