PAU (Pro A) - Pau-Orthez coach Gordon Herbert has set his sights on landing the French championship after signing a two-year contract with the team.

The 47 year-old Canadian, who was also linked with a move to ASVEL, took the reins at Pau following the club's decision not to retain Didier Gadou.

"I was very close to signing with ASVEL since I had turned down the offer from Russian team (Ural Great) Perm when Pau contacted me," he said. "Joining Pau-Orthez became my top priority.

"This is a great honour for me to be here, this club has a huge tradition not only in France but also in Europe. This is an ideal place to coach basketball."

Herbert, the former coach of Paris Basket Racing, has previously lifted the German title with Frankfurt and is confident of brining success to Pau, who have won nine Pro A trophies including three since 2001.

"A great challenge is awaiting me," he added. "Our aim is not only to qualify for the (EuroLeague) Top 16 but also to be French champions."
