CHALON (LNB) – The smiles on the face of ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne forward Mickael Gelabale on Saturday night turned to a frown on Wednesday evening after he and his teammates were blown out in their French play-off quarter-final opener by Elan Chalon/Saône.
Gelabale was presented with the league’s MVP award at the weekend but he came crashing back down to earth after scoring just six points in a 98-74 drubbing by Chalon, the team that won the Coupe de France on Sunday.
Nicolas Lang, Blake Schilb and Steed Tchicamboud poured in 16 points apiece for Chalon while Alade Aminu had a game-high 14 rebounds to go with his 12 points.
ASVEL coach Nordine Ghrib said: "We conceded too many easy baskets on fast-breaks and have not put in enough effort on defense.
"I hope my team will be able to react on Saturday (for Game 2)."
Nancy, meanwhile, defeated Hyeres-Toulon in their play-off opener with Tremmell Darden scoring 20 points in the 68-64 triumph.
