    SPAIN

    FIBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, WOMEN
    SUMMER 2006

    OFFENSIVE CHARACTERISTICS
This system is based on transition first and half court play second. Out running the opponent is the
goal in transition for easy baskets. Ball skills are important because all players pass, dribble and
shoot the ball. Isolation is a part of the offense and can materialize at any time or within a set play.
Quick action handoffs, on ball screens and penetration are a part of most possessions. The offense
is geared to make the defense accountable for itself on every possession.

    TRANSITION
This team operates with a running mentality and scores a lot of points in transition. Every loose ball,
rebound, and forces turnover is a chance to quickly transition to the offensive end. The first player
down the floor anticipates the over the top pass for a lay up. By quickly converting from defense to
offense, this team takes advantage of the opponent as they attempt to get back. Trapping in the post
can create a lot of turnovers, which can be turned into points on the other end.

    OFFENSIVE TENDENCIES
The tendency is to score first in transition, followed by half court structure and set plays. Handoffs,
on ball screens and specific set plays provide many scoring opportunities. They will drive the
baseline and pass back out to the perimeter at difficult angles. All perimeter plays react to the
baseline drive by spotting up in open areas with hands ready to catch and shoot. In the half court,
they are very set oriented and have many different set plays they can execute.

    SET PLAYS
    1. Triple Option Set—Options after ball reversal are: Dive cut, double down screen, and double
      baseline screen.
    2. On ball reversal, wing cuts as if to come off a back screen, but instead cuts high off a double
screen set for an open shot.
    3. On Ball Iso Set—Begins with a shallow cut by perimeter. On the catch, immediate on ball screen
and roll. If ball stays with perimeter player it becomes an isolation situation on the open wing.
    ZONE OFFENSE
Zone offense is based on player and ball movement in and out of the zone. There is an emphasis on
penetrating the zone with the pass first, then with the dribble. A post player will begin on the
perimeter and reverse the ball, followed by a cut into the middle of the zone. The offense evolves
from a 4 out, 1 in set to a 3 out, 2 in alignment. The high post player set on ball screens for
perimeters player up top. Lots of “screening in” the zone on the weak side for possible skip passes.
Perimeter players find gaps in the defense and are ready at all times with hands ready to catch and
    shoot.

    DEFENSIVE CHARACTERISTICS
The man-to-man defense relies on perimeter quickness and front line rebounding. Quick, scrappy
play on the perimeter forces turnovers and makes dribblers make quick decisions. All five players are
involved on the defensive boards. A rebound by a post player guarantees a quick outlet to start the
    transition game.
