ARGENTINA
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, SUMMER 2006
TEAM CHARACTERISTICS
Argentina is a cohesive, skilled and hard playing team with weapons at every position. Eight players
are capable of scoring, rebounding and defending at a high level of play. This team is relentless in
their style of play. Very aggressive with the basketball, using on ball screens to their advantage.
Penetration is an anchor for their offense, looking to score or dish with the ball. Players without the
ball do an outstanding job of sliding into open spots and getting open for the penetrator. Rebound
aggressively on both ends. Front line players are physical in the block area and can score with their
back to the basket. They are good passers and excel on the pick and roll aspect of their offense.
Always a threat to pick, roll, and score.
OFFENSIVE CHARACTERISTICS
TRANSITION

Transition is the number one priority after rebounding. Quick, long outlet passes made by big men to
either guard. Goal is to attack the basket and score quickly. Will shoot open three on the break.
Guards drive the ball extremely hard and will give it up only if stopped by a defender. Excellent
passers and always throw ahead to an open player down the floor.
OFFENSIVE TENDENCIES

Very skilled offensive unit. Every player can handle the ball, pass, get open, and create their own
shot. A selfless team that is concerned first about the team, as evidenced by their passing and the
ability to pass until they find an open man. Good use of the dribble to space the floor and penetrate.
When penetrating to the basket, the first option is to score. If scoring opportunity not there, they pass
well to spot up players. Very aggressive on the offense end. Make good use of the on ball screen,
which is a part of almost every offensive possession. Front line players will crash the offensive glass
if not blocked out. Set play oriented team and plays are well executed. If set breaks down they flow
into a free lance offense based on spacing, penetration, and on ball screens.
SET PLAYS

Run a series of set plays to free specific players on specific parts of the floor. Here is a brief
description of each set.
- Hand
Off—Double screen for shooter

- UCLA
screen to on ball screen, back screen for the screener.

- Guard
to guard ball reversal, flare screen for guard. May begin with the
hand off also, then flare.

- On
ball screen, roll, and fill. The look is to the post player who
posts up after rolling.

- Post
pop out, double screen for shooter on weak side, baseline runner
comes off 2 screens.

- Post
pop out, little/big cross screen on weak side.
- Post
pop, flare screen for point guard, on reversal double back screen
for post player for lob.

Did not face too much zone in this tournament. Set is two guards up top, wing, and two posts inside.
Will set on ball screens agasint the zone. Action is based on ball movement, penetration, and
flashing into open areas in the paint and short corners. Posts play from elbow area to basket and out
to short corner. Perimeter players have freedom to use the entire floor. Excellent spot up players, so
playing zone is not advised.
OB PLAYS

Baseline OB—Designed to enter ball and reverse it. The inbounds passer cross screens for post to
free him at the block area. Sideline OB--#13 sets back screen for inbounds passer then gets down
screen to free him for open shot. Also, same set can be used for an open side isolation play.
DEFENSIVE CHARACTERISTICS

They pressure the ball adequately and exert passing lane pressure constantly. Usually get 2 or 3
steals by stepping into the passing lane on wing entry or ball reversal. Will gamble to get a steal. Play
behind in the post and are physical on the blocks and the boards. Can half court trap at times.
Basically a man to man team but may mix in some 2-3 zone to change tempo.
