FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2025: SMART Power Rankings Vol. 2 Quarter-Final drop

Which team is looking strongest heading into the decisive stage of the tournament?

SANTIAGO (Chile) – The Group Phase of the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2025 is now in the books, and it’s time for the decisive Quarter-Finals, which will be played on Friday, July 4. Eight teams remain in the hunt for the continental crown, a direct ticket to the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026, and a total of six available spots in the World Cup Qualifying Tournaments. With so much on the line, it’s the perfect moment to assess the landscape. These rankings are not based solely on results from the first stage, but will also take into account overall team performance, player form, roster depth, and, of course, the matchups in this round. Here is our power ranking ahead of the knockout stage:

    1. BRA (-)

Record: 4-0 The defending champions made it clear they’re in top form, led by their two stars: Damiris Dantas (18.8 PPG, 6.3 RPG) and Kamilla Cardoso (11.8 PPG, 9.0 RPG, 2.3 BPG, 1.5 SPG). Both players have dominated on both ends of the court and were the driving force behind Brazil’s undefeated Group Phase. Vitoria Marcelino (9.3 PPG, 5.0 RPG) has also made a strong contribution, and among the younger players, 22-year-old point guard Bella Nascimento (11.5 PPG, 44% 3PT, 4.0 APG) has stepped up. However, heading into this stage, Brazil will need other veteran players to increase their output, especially with a potential semi-final in mind. The matchup against Mexico looks favorable, considering the Mexicans won only one game in the Group Phase

    2. USA (-)

Record: 4-0 The young U.S. squad has shown a very high level of play thanks to its depth and versatility. Eleven of its twelve players are averaging over 12 minutes per game, and the contributions have come across the board. Joyce Edwards (13.5 PPG), Gianna Kneepkens (13.3), Mikayla Blakes (12.0), and Raegan Beers (10.5) have carried the scoring load, while point guard Olivia Miles has been the engine of the team, averaging 8.3 assists and 6.3 rebounds per game (team-highs in both), along with 8.0 points and a team-best efficiency rating of 19.0. So far, the team appears flawless, and the Dominican Republic is not expected to pose much of a challenge. The real test will likely come in a potential Semifinal, where the youth of the roster will be put to the test.

    3. CAN (-)

Record: 3-1 The phrase “a mix of youth and experience” may sound like a cliché, but the Canadian team truly has that balance. Veterans Kayla Alexander, Shay Colley, and Sami Hill are the leaders of the group, while talented youngsters like Shayeann Day-Wilson, Yvonne Ejim, Tara Wallack, Delaney Gibb, and Syla Swords have helped push the team forward. Canada enters the Quarter-Final matchup as the favorite against Colombia, but will need to take care of business against a battle-tested squad. Barring any surprises, Canada should reach the Semi-Finals for the ninth straight AmeriCup.

    4. PUR (-)

Record: 3-1 Puerto Rico continues to establish itself as a continental force after advancing through another Group Phase. It wasn’t the most dominant performance—the team struggled in their opener against Colombia and only kept up with USA for one half—but got the job done. They have the tools to win their Quarter-Final matchup against Argentina, but leading scorer Arella Guirantes (17.5 PPG) will need more support, especially from Mya Hollingshed (8.5 PPG), who is capable of contributing more.

    5. COL (+1)

Record: 2-2 Colombia met expectations in the Group Phase, but if the team wants to break past the fifth-place ceiling they’ve hit in the last three AmeriCups, they’ll need to pull off a major upset against Canada in the Quarter-Finals. That will be a tall order, as Canada has looked solid even in its loss to Brazil. Colombia’s strengths are its team chemistry and cohesion, but players will also need to shoot well and match Canada’s physicality in the paint to have a chance. If they fall short, they’ll still be a strong contender for one of the six spots in the qualifying tournaments for the 2026 World Cup.

    6. ARG (-1)

Record: 2-2 Argentina has a chance to pull off a major upset against Puerto Rico, a team that may be beatable but still looks stronger on paper. In the Group Phase, the Argentinians relied heavily on the three-point shot (38 attempts per game), but they’ll need more than perimeter shooting this time around. Diana Cabrera showed that she can contribute in the paint in the last game (14 PTS, 15 REB), and the return of veteran center Agostina Burani—who missed the last group game—would be a major boost. Rebounding will be key, and Argentina must be solid in that department to slow Puerto Rico’s transition game. After finishing seventh in the 2023 AmeriCup, earning a top-six finish and a ticket to the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers would be a step forward.

    7. MEX (+1)

Record: 1-3 Mexico was a bit of a disappointment in the Group Phase. After a strong showing at the 2024 World Cup Pre-Qualifiers at home and with the return of Gabriela Jáquez, expectations were higher. However, Mexico only managed to defeat Chile, the weakest team in the group, and struggled against stronger opponents. Facing defending champions Brazil in the Quarter-Finals seems like a long shot based on their previous performances, but they could still aim for a sixth-place finish and a spot in next year’s World Cup Qualifying Tournaments.

    8. DOM (-1)

Record: 1-3 The Dominican Republic enters the Quarter-Finals as the team with the lowest odds. Even in its lone win against El Salvador, the team had to come from behind and nearly lost. At times, they looked visibly frustrated. The absence of Esmery Martínez has been a significant blow and has deeply affected their performance. There seems to be no real path to victory against the USA, outside of individual moments from Cesarina Capellán. The reclassification round will also be tough, regardless of the opponent. FIBA
