Eleven of the twelve teams set to compete at 2024 FIBA U18 Women's AfroBasket have been confirmed.

ABIDJAN (Cote d'Ivoire) - The list of teams headed to Pretoria, South Africa for this year’s FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket is almost done with favourites Mali and Egypt looking to continue their dominance.

Set for 1 to 13 September, 12 teams will clash for both the title and a chance to represent the continent in the next FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup World. The finalists qualify for the global competition.

Previously known as the FIBA U18 Women's African Championship, the biennial international youth basketball competition has seen Mali dominate, winning eight of the 16 editions held so far.

As Mali look to extend their record in South Africa, Egypt remain a tough opponent if the two sides’ performance in this year’s U17 World Cup is anything to go by, as some of the players who featured in the global competition hosted in Mexico are expected to feature.

The two sides clashed in the 9-16 classification matches, the Pharaohs exacting revenge on Mali who headed to the global stage as the African champions, albeit by a slim margin in a 55-52 outcome.

Egypt placed 11th (2-5) while Mali settled for 13th (3-4). It remains to be seen who carries the day in South Africa.

Meanwhile, former champions Angola are expected to also mount a challenge, having fallen in the semis in 2022 when Mali reclaimed the trophy for a record-extending eighth title.

On their part, Tunisia, who won a three-way qualification tournament held in July, make a comeback in what will be their seventh appearance. The North Africans carry hopes of repeating their 2004 and 2008 exploits when they lifted the title, the first achieved on their debut. They last participated ten years ago finishing sixth.

2010 champions Nigeria make a return in what will be their third competition on the continental stage. On their debut in 2008, the West Africans finished fourth before returning to lift the title two years later.

Rwanda are returning since their debut in 2018 while their Zone Five counterparts and regional qualifier winners Uganda, competing for the fifth time, hope to improve on their fifth-place finish in 2022.
