FIBA U16 Women’s AmeriCup Day 2: USA sets scoring record with 138-point win over Puerto Rico

    Game Report

The U.S. national team poured in 138 points against Puerto Rico to register the highest scoring output in a single game in the tournament’s history. Argentina, Colombia, and Canada also came out on top.

IRAPUATO (México) - Day 2 of the FIBA U16 Women’s AmeriCup brought new records for most points by a team (138) and most combined points in a game (176), both set during the United States’ win over Puerto Rico in the second game of the day at the Inforum in Irapuato, Mexico. Argentina also picked up its second win over Venezuela to remain unbeaten in Group A. In Group B, Colombia and Canada secured victories over Panama and Mexico. Here’s how the Day 2 action unfolded:

    ARG 64 - 52 VEN

Argentina (2-0) took control of the scoreboard early and never relinquished it. The first quarter ended 24-8 in its favor, and from that point on, the team withstood Venezuela's comeback attempts to secure the win. Florencia Losada led the way with 17 points, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Francisca Canello posted a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds, adding 5 assists and 3 blocks. For the second day in a row, Santina Cherot had 6 steals and added 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Isabella Roldán contributed 14 rebounds, 7 points, and 4 blocks.

On the other side, Venezuela (0-2) struggled offensively, shooting just 26 percent from the field (17-65). Alexandra Cabeza stood out with 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 steals. Greidysmar Camacaro added 10 points, including two three-pointers.

    USA 138 - 38 PUR

The United States (2-0) secured the victory while setting two new tournament records. The first was the highest point total by a team in a single game at the FIBA U16 Women’s AmeriCup, surpassing the 128 points the U.S. recorded against the Dominican Republic in 2009. Additionally, the 46 points scored in the first quarter exceeded the previous record of 41 points, also held by the U.S. in 2023.

The North Americans’ dominance was further highlighted by the 100-point margin of victory—the third-largest in tournament history. The 109-point win against Costa Rica in 2021 and the 111-point win over the Dominican Republic in 2009 are the only games to rank higher. This matchup also set the record for most combined points in a game with 176. The United States and Mexico previously held the record with 169 points (126-43) in the Group Phase in 2021. Reece Gilpatrick led all scorers with 20 points on a perfect 9-for-9 shooting. Tatianna Griffin hit four three-pointers en route to 18 points, while also recording 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Ivanna Wilson registered a double-double with 18 points and 10 steals.

For Puerto Rico (0-2), Maliyah Mays led the team with 9 points.

    COL 61 - 29 PAN

Colombia (1-1) quickly took control with a 17-2 run, securing the win over Panama (0-2) to record their first victory of the tournament. Keren Bertel (15 points) and Alisson Restrepo (12) led the scoring for the Colombian squad, which once again struggled with field goal efficiency, shooting just 26 percent.

On the defensive end, Maily Saavedra stood out with 8 rebounds and 6 steals, while also doing an excellent job guarding one of Panama’s key offensive threats, Nickielys Álvarez. Despite facing a suffocating defense, Álvarez finished with 13 points—9 of them from the free-throw line—and grabbed 7 rebounds for the Central American team.

    CAN 76 - 51 MEX

In the final game of the day, Canada (2-0) used its size and physicality to overcome a Mexican team that struggled with perimeter shooting. The Canadians dominated the paint, outrebounding the home team 61-34, including 28 offensive boards that led to 19 second-chance points. Portia Reisen led the way with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range, while Avery Arije added 14 points and 5 assists. Ashley Vande Ven posted the highest efficiency rating of the team (20), finishing with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals.

For Mexico (1-1), which went 0-for-13 from beyond the arc after setting a tournament record with 16 three-pointers in Game 1, the top performers were Jordan Martin (7 points, 8 rebounds), along with Yania Valverde and Belén Velázquez, who each scored 10 points.
