ABIDJAN (Cote d'Ivoire) - From August 4 to 7, 2026, the FIBA Regional Office of Africa organized the first edition of the National Coach Developer Program in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on the sidelines of the FIBA U18 AfroBasket.
The four-day program brought together 15 technical directors and technical department representatives from 12 African national federations: Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Algeria, Madagascar, Sierra Leone, Mali, Senegal, Chad, Comoros, Guinea, Cameroon, and Uganda.
The program aimed to empower national federations, provide technical leaders from national federations with the necessary technical and organizational tools to design and implement national coach education processes.
This approach complements the various coach education programs delivered by FIBA and FIBA Africa while enabling national federations to develop their own internal systems for the continuous training and development of coaches.
The training session emphasized the importance of establishing a structured, sustainable, and context-specific development process while aligning with the requirements of high-level basketball and FIBA’s development framework.
Beyond the four-day training, the initiative aimed to support each participating federation in developing and implementing an internal national coach education program.
This first edition was an important step in FIBA Africa’s strategy to strengthen National Federations' technical structures and develop sustainable local coaching education capacity, which is essential to the long-term development of basketball across the continent.
The initiative provided an opportunity for technical leaders from different national federations to share experiences, exchange practices, and develop a shared approach to coaching development across Africa.
Through this initiative will help national federations build stronger, more autonomous, and more effective coach education systems that align with high-level basketball standards.
