LONDON (FIBA) - The London 2012 Olympic Basketball Tournament has come to an end with the USA successfully defending their gold medals in both the men's and women's competitions.

Now the attention turns to 2014 when FIBA will hold its first-ever Basketball World Cup and the 17th edition of the FIBA World Championship for Women.

By virtue of taking gold in their respective events, both USA teams have automatically qualified for the main basketball events of 2014.

In reaching the Final of the Men's Tournament, Spain have also booked their place, which makes things promising.

Who will join them in Spain (for the men's competition) and in Turkey (for the women's competition) will be determined in 2013 when the continental championships take place in all five of FIBA's zones.

An official handover will take place at FIBA's post-Olympic gala on Sunday evening in London.
