GENEVA (2014 FIBA World Championship) – Japan 2006 was rated the ‘best ever’. Television ratings, Sponsorship income, Ticket income and media interest has been at an all-time high. The brand is healthy and looks to a bright future.
The fact that nine countries started a race with three very solid bids remaining is proof of the intense interest in countries hosting this high profile event. The FIBA World Championship offers a country a chance to attract basketball fans from around the world and to organize a basketball celebration that will be embraced by a whole country.
It also offers a unique chance to improve the basketball infrastructure in each country and create a legacy for basketball that will last for generations. The budget for venues has been increased drastically in comparison with former bid procedures.
Tomorrow, the final presentations from the three delegations will be followed by a report from the 2014 FIBA World Championship Evaluation Commission that visited all three countries during the month of March.
Immediately after (at approximately 17:30 hours CET), the 20 eligible FIBA Central Board members will cast their votes by secret ballot. In order to be elected the winner, a candidature will need to receive a simple majority of the votes cast. In the case that no candidate receives such majority in the first round, the candidate with the least number of votes will be eliminated and a second round of voting will be conducted with the other two candidatures.
At 18:30 the Assignment Ceremony will start and approximately at 19:00 hours the announcement will be made.
The complete assignment ceremony will be covered on www.fiba.basketball/2014bid. In addition to text and photo coverage, there will be a live stream from the event.
