    GENEVA/SAN JUAN (FIBA Central Board) - The FIBA Central Board meeting was opened on Saturday at the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico with the participation of the most important basketball authorities worldwide.

    The day started with a message from the Governor of Puerto Rico, Hon. Luis Fortuño, who officially opened the meeting and was there with Sports Secretary, Mr. Henry Neumann, also the Puerto Rican Olympic Committee President, Mr. David Bernier, IOC member Mr. Richard Carrion and the Puerto Rican Basketball Federation President, Mr. Carlos Beltran.

    "It is an honor to welcome you to Puerto Rico", said Fortuño, who is the ninth governor of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

    "Having this meeting in San Juan is so important to us; we are using basketball as a social integration tool, reaching out to all the communities to bring social change. We do activities everywhere six days a week because basketball is such a powerful sport in Puerto Rico", he added.

    That Puerto Ricans live and breath basketball every day they have proven often in international competition. The little island is one of the hotbeds of world basketball and is steadily present at World Championships and Olympics.

    The Board meeting continues until Sunday.
