MIES (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - The 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup had a huge economic impact for host country Spain, according to a detailed independent study commissioned by the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) and carried out by professional services firm Deloitte.
Hosting FIBA's flagship event generated an economic impact valued at EUR €265 million for Spain.
An estimated EUR €83 million came as a result of having more than 55,000 fans travel from around the world to cheer on their national teams in the cities of Bilbao, Granada, Gran Canaria, Sevilla, Barcelona and Madrid. A total of 672,000 spectators attended the 76 games, with an attendance rate of more than 80 percent across the six venues.
The promotion of the FIBA Basketball World Cup started 500 days before the start of the event, with activities taking place around the world between January 2012 and September 2014. The presence of the event logo in the advertising campaigns of 24 partners resulted in an additional value of EUR €212 million, with an outreach of 40 million clients.
