MIAMI (United States) – Window 4 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers has come to an end, and it’s time to assess where the 12 teams stand after the first two games of the Second Round. Find out which national teams delivered the best performances and which ones fell short of expectations during the August games.
1. CAN (-)
Record: 8-0 Canada still hasn’t found an opponent capable of stopping their shine. They won on the road against Panama (86-66) before having to work much harder to beat Argentina at home (97-92), coming back from a 17-point deficit. Marcus Carr was once again important, but against Argentina, NBA players Luguentz Dort and Nickeil Alexander-Walker made their impact clear. Head coach Gordon Herbert’s team remains the only undefeated squad in the Americas Qualifiers and holds a considerable advantage in Group F. With eight wins in as many games, Canada’s qualification for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 appears to be only a matter of time.
2. USA (-)
Record: 7-1 United States did exactly what was expected. They first defeated Chile on the road (89-71) and then cruised past Colombia (104-80), closing the window with two wins and remaining atop Group E. Mike James controlled the tempo from the point. Cole Swider provided his usual outside shooting threat, and Orlando Robinson II dominated in the paint. Terry Stotts also enjoyed a perfect debut as head coach of the U.S. national team. With the amount of talent available in the country, even without relying on the top NBA stars, the United States looks increasingly on course for Qatar 2027.
3. DOM (+2)
Record: 6-2 Dominican Republic was one of the biggest winners of Window 4. The team first pulled off an upset by defeating Brazil on the road (94-90), with backcourt duo Andres Feliz and Jean Montero combining for 51 points. Then back at home, they showed no mercy against Chile, cruising to a 101-66 victory. The win in Brazil carries particular weight because it puts the Dominicans in a strong position to qualify. After a performance like that against one of the region’s top nations, the Dominican team reaffirmed itself as a serious contender to reach Qatar.
4. ARG (+2)
Record: 6-2 Argentina arguably faced the toughest schedule of the entire Window 4 and rose to the challenge. They defeated Puerto Rico at home (89-75) before pushing Canada to the limit on Canadian soil, eventually falling after building a 17-point lead. Facundo Campazzo, Gabriel Deck and Leandro Bolmaro were all at a very high level, while Nicolas Laprovittola added a strong offensive performance against Canada. Deck’s injury in that game was the only negative note. Although the loss to Canada left a bitter taste, the overall balance is positive. Argentina remains third in Group F and showed signs of returning to best form, an especially encouraging development for a team that missed the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2023.
5. URU (-1)
Record: 6-2 Uruguay missed an opportunity by losing at home to the Bahamas (103-94), but immediately bounced back by defeating Puerto Rico (80-75). Joaquin Rodriguez once again showcased his quality, although he was ejected for technical fouls in both games. Santiago Vescovi also delivered standout performances, while Bruno Fitipaldo emerged as a leader in the win over Puerto Rico. The setback against the Bahamas cost Uruguay one spot, but La Celeste remains in an excellent position in Group F. After being one of the biggest surprises of the First Round, the team once again showed character by bouncing back against one of the region’s historic powers.
6. BRA (-3)
Record: 6-2 Brazil was the biggest loser of Window 4. The team entered the window undefeated with six wins but left with two losses: first at home against the Dominican Republic and then against Mexico (79-74). Leo Meindl and Raul Neto had solid performances, but several players who had played important roles in recent windows failed to meet expectations. The problem for Brazil is that the First Round had been relatively comfortable against lower-ranked opponents, but the level of competition has now increased. They remain third in Group E and well positioned to qualify, but they will need to bounce back in November to avoid trouble.
7. MEX (-)
Record: 5-3 Mexico had a near-perfect window. The team made the most of their two home games, first defeating Colombia (112-86) and then Brazil. Pako Cruz and JJ Avila were outstanding, but the biggest credit goes to the collective effort of a team that delivered when it mattered most. The win over Colombia also went into the record books thanks to the 28 three-pointers Mexico made, a new record in the Americas Qualifiers. With fourth place in Group E in their hands, Mexico is in a good position to claim one of the qualifying spots. The team can even start looking toward higher positions in the group.
8. BAH (+1)
Record: 4-4 The Bahamas jumped right back into the race with two extremely valuable wins. They first surprised Uruguay on the road and then took care of business at home against Panama (100-82). V.J. Edgecombe Jr. and Buddy Hield led the offense, while Kai Jones was a dominant presence in the paint. The win over Uruguay changed the picture for the Bahamas, which now sit fourth in Group F and have kept their World Cup dream alive. The challenge will be maintaining this momentum, especially with Mexico currently better positioned in the race to be the best fourth-place team between the two groups.
9. PUR (-1)
Record: 2-6 Puerto Rico needed a positive window to move closer to the qualifying spots, but came away empty-handed. The team lost on the road to Argentina and then fell to Uruguay, leaving them fifth in Group F with very little room for error. The situation is particularly difficult for one of the region’s historic basketball powers. The Puerto Rican team no longer controls its own destiny, and the streak of 10 consecutive FIBA Basketball World Cup appearances is under serious threat.
10. PAN (-)
Record: 2-6 Panama faced two opponents that were theoretically superior in Group F and was unable to pull off an upset. The team lost at home to Canada before falling on the road against the Bahamas. The Panamanians have shown some promising moments throughout the process, but the difference in grade ultimately prevailed. With six losses in eight games and sitting at the bottom of the group, Panama has very little room to maneuver in the upcoming windows. Still, their goal will be to make the most of every opportunity and try to change the outlook.
11. COL (+1)
Record: 3-5 Colombia faced a really difficult Window 4. The game Colombia was scheduled to play at home against Mexico had to be moved to Mexico following the recent earthquake in Colombia, meaning the team ended up playing both games on the road. They suffered losses to Mexico and the United States. The results were in line with expectations against two opponents who entered the window as favorites. Colombia sits fifth in Group E and needs to bounce back to remain in contention for qualification. The margin for error is slim, but there are still games to be played.
12. CHI (-1)
Record: 2-6 Chile closed Window 4 with two losses against highly ranked opponents, the United States and the Dominican Republic. The team paid the price for lack of experience in the Second Round, which they were playing for the first time in FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers history. Making it this far already represents an important step for Chilean basketball, but the competitive landscape is particularly demanding. With a 2-6 record at the bottom of Group E, Chile’s chances of securing a historic qualification appear very slim.
