FIBA AmeriCup 2025 – Team profile: Bahamas

    Preview

In 2024, the Caribbean squad had the best year in its history, coming one win short of qualifying for the Olympic Games. Now, without several of its stars, the team will look to surprise in Group A.

MIAMI (United States) – Bahamas is coming off its best showing at a FIBA event— the Olympic Qualifying Tournament held last year in Spain. With NBA stars Buddy Hield, Deandre Ayton, Eric Gordon, and VJ Edgecombe Jr., the team defeated Finland, Poland, and Lebanon before falling to the host nation in the Final. That energy carried into the AmeriCup Qualifiers, where even without its stars, the Bahamas secured a berth with victories over Puerto Rico and Cuba. At the continental tournament, the team will aim to continue its upward trajectory and improve on their past performances.

The Bahamas is ranked 52nd in the FIBA World Ranking and 10th in the Americas.

    Tournament history

This will be the nation’s second appearance in the region’s premier national team tournament. The Bahamas debuted in 1995, finishing eighth place.

    Players to watch

Domnick Bridgewater, known for his offensive skills, will be in charge of running the offense. The point guard stood out in the qualifiers, averaging 17.0 points over four games. This time, the team will also have Isaiah Mobley, brother of Cleveland Cavaliers star Evan Mobley. His arrival will bring more presence in the paint. The power forward who played for Delaware in the G League averaged 15.2 points and 7.7 rebounds. He took part in the latest Summer League with Golden State but had limited playing time.

Travis Munnings, a veteran forward with experience in several elite European leagues, appears on the preliminary roster. In AmeriCup Qualifiers, he played in just one game. Last season, he suited up for Spain’s Fuenlabrada, averaging 8.9 points with a 44.6 percent mark from three-point range.

    Head coach: Lourawls Nairn

In a surprise move, the Bahamas appointed Nairn as head coach for the AmeriCup. He replaces American Chris DeMarco, who remains in the position but will not attend the event. Nairn was still an active player in 2024 and was on the 12-man roster for the Olympic qualifying tournament in Spain. The national team management and DeMarco himself trust that the leadership he displayed on the court as a point guard will translate to the sidelines.

    Outlook

Bahamas will need to deliver one of its best performances to make it out of Group A. The team will face two heavyweights, the United States and Brazil, making a top-two finish an intimidating challenge. The Bahamas is likely to battle Uruguay for third place, with the hope of being one of the two best third-place teams to advance to the Quarter-Finals.
