MANAGUA (Nicaragua) –The Group Phase of the FIBA AmeriCup 2025 has wrapped up, and now we head into the Quarter-Finals set for Thursday, August 28. The top eight teams are still standing, and it’s time to evaluate how each one arrives at this win-or-go-home stage. These rankings take into account team performances in the opening round, player form, and the upcoming matchups. Here are our Power Rankings heading into the AmeriCup Quarter-Finals:
1. CAN (+2)
Record: 3-0 The Canadians are serious contenders for that long-awaited first continental crown. They were the most efficient and dominant team in the Group Phase. However, they faced two of the weaker sides in Venezuela and Panama, but they also beat a legitimate contender in Puerto Rico, sending a strong message to the rest of the field. Their quarter-final matchup against Colombia looks favorable, given the lack of depth on the South American squad.
2. USA (-)
Record: 2-1 The United States didn’t look as dominant as in past editions, but its victory over Brazil suggested the team is trending upward. The players only got together a week and a half before the tournament started, and they are just now beginning to click. As the competition goes on, they’ll only become more dangerous. They’ll face a very good Uruguay team, the same one that beat them in the group phase. But with that loss fresh in mind, the Americans will know their opponent better this time, make the necessary adjustments, and come in hungry for revenge.
3. BRA (-2)
Record: 2-1 Brazil drops in our rankings after falling to the USA and finishing third in Group A despite entering as favorites. That doesn’t mean they’ve lost their edge. In fact, against the Americans, they were missing key scorers Georginho De Paula and Vitor Benite. If both return for the matchup with the Dominican Republic, Brazil could even be the favorite— especially since the Dominicans won’t have David Jones-García, still suspended.
4. PUR (-)
Record: 2-1 Puerto Rico came up short against Canada in the Group Phase but still looks like a medal contender. Led by José Alvarado, Ismael Romero, George Conditt, and Gian Clavell, they have plenty of weapons. Still, they’ll need to be sharp against Argentina. Even though the defending champions have a younger roster, they remain a dangerous opponent.
5. DOM (-)
Record: 3-0 The Dominicans went undefeated in the group phase, but stayed put in our rankings due to the absence of David Jones-García. The forward was the team’s most efficient player, and against a tough opponent like Brazil, his suspension will be felt. Still, the team remains strong with Jean Montero, Jassel Pérez, and Víctor Liz stepping up. If they can get past this test, they should be considered contenders all the way to the title.
6. ARG (-)
Record: 2-1 The defending champions will face a tough quarter-final against Puerto Rico, one of the deepest teams in the competition. Argentina, meanwhile, features several young players trying to step up, and they’ll again be short-handed in the paint without Gonzalo Bressán, who remains suspended. If this youthful Argentine side manages to pull off the upset, it would be a huge confidence boost for this generation, both in this tournament and moving forward.
7. URU (-)
Record: 2-1 This Uruguayan team is one of the best versions we’ve seen in years. Disciplined and resilient, they proved their strength by defeating the USA in the group phase. The downside? They’ll have to face the Americans again in the quarter-finals — and beating them twice is no easy task. They have the talent, but the odds are not in their favor.
8. COL (+2)
Record: 1-2 Colombia is the only team to reach this round with a losing record, but qualifying for the quarter-finals is already historic— the first time in their three AmeriCup appearances that they’ve made it past the Group Phase. That alone is a big achievement. Realistically, however, pulling off an upset against Canada seems unlikely. Beyond their starting five, depth is an issue.
