This is the second time that USA will be hosting this FIBA Americas’ competition; being the first one in Portland, Oregon, in 1992.
This qualifying tournament will be granting another three countries (those who finish on third, fourth, and fifith place) the opportunity to qualify directly to Beijing 2008 at the World Pre-Olympic Championship, to be held in a place to be determined yet, but that could be held in Europe a month before the Olympics Games.
The first Pre-Olympic Tournament (now FIBA Americas Championship) was held in Puerto Rico in 1980, coming back in 1999 and 2003. Uruguay and Argentina hosted it in 1984, 1988 and 1995, respectively.
