MEXICALI (FIBA Americas League) - Miami Tropics shocked hosts Soles de Mexicali and Peñarol defeated Minas Tenis Clube on the second day of the FIBA Americas League Final Four.
Miami hit back from a seven-point deficit in overtime to prevail 116-108.
The Tropics, trailing 108-101, reeled off 15 straight points to beat Soles, who lost Hugo Carrillo, Horacio Llamas, James Penny and Greg Lewis to fouls late in the game.
Jermaine Watson led Miami with 32 points and 11 boards while Marcus Barnes poured in 29.
Richard Lopez’s three-pointer with 31 seconds left to tied the game at 100-100
Watson and Barnes then missed with attempts from behind the arc for Miami, Lopez was off target for Soles and Cornelius Mitchell misfired with a three attempt for the Tropics before the final buzzer sounded to signal overtime.
After Soles moved in front 108-101 with 3:02 left in the extra period following consecutive Lopez jump shots, Karel Rosario made a jumper for Miami to spark the game-winning, 15-0 surge.
Barnes and Watson followed with three-balls, Rosario hit another jump shot and Watson added five free throws in the last 34 seconds as the Tropics silenced the home crowd.
In a losing effort Horacio Llamas had 26 points and 13 rebounds while Richard Lopez had 22 points and Greg Lewis 20.
Miami will finish their Final Four against Minas Tenis Club, who lost to Peñarol 97-85.
If Peñarol win for a third successive time, they will be the FIBA Americas League champions but a defeat and a Miami win would create a three-way tie for first place and then points differential will determine the champions.
Peñarol are in a commanding position after their second successive triumph.
Juan Manuel Locatelli buried seven of his eight shot from three-point range en route to 24 points and he also had seven rebounds and five assists.
Quincy Wadley led Peñarol with 25.
Argentinian Facundo Sucatzky scored 19 points and handed out 14 assists for Minas, who also got 23 points and 11 boards from Jasper Johnson.
